Runner Guide

Runner is the default job in untitled tag game. You spawn blue, the prompt says stay alive, and the tagger (or bomb, freezer, infected, peasant — see special roles) wants a piece of you. This page is about not getting tagged without becoming a statue. Pair it with movement, maps, gamemodes, and getting started.

The live recode is online multiplayer. Classic, Infected, Freeze, Bomb, and Crown all use a runner (or survivor) body. The win condition changes; the movement does not.

What winning looks like

  • Classic — still a runner when the timer ends. A tag swaps you into tagger. That is a loss of the runner objective, not a death.
  • Infected — still unconverted. One tag and you join the horde.
  • Freeze — stay thawed, and thaw teammates. A freeze is not the end if a friend tags you in time.
  • Bomb — never hold the fuse when it pops. Passing the bomb is a swap; exploding is an elimination.
  • Crown — you are usually a peasant hunting crowns, not a runner. If Chaos hands you a runner body anyway, survive until the mix settles.

Ghost spectators watch after you are out. Use that time to study the line that killed you.

Jukes that actually work

A juke is not a random jump. It is a direction change the tagger already committed past.

  1. Slide into a gap, then cut. Sliding (C on the ground) locks your move vector while the camera still turns. Go under a Bloxburg rail or a Crossroads fence, camera-flip, and leave on a different heading. The tagger’s swing hits the gap you vacated.
  2. Roll a landing they cannot copy. Press C in the air before you hit the floor. Early rolls give a bigger speed burst (the recode scales the bonus by hang time). If the tagger rolls late or not at all, you gain a body-length.
  3. Fall swing off a drop. Find a bar under a height (Crossroads playground, Glass Houses outpost). Fall onto it so the swing converts vertical speed into a horizontal launch. A tagger who follows the stairs instead of the bar is gone.
  4. Vault chain along a ledge. Repeated vaults add momentum. Use this on SFOTH and Rocket Arena lips. Do not vault in place — that is a pose for the screenshot.
  5. Zipline as a door, not a ride. Jump off early. A full ride is a committed line; a good tagger waits at the end. Treat the line as a height reset, then roll the landing into an alley.

Hard rule: do not juke in a dead end. Thieves’ Den interiors, mansion rooms, Area 51 hallways, and Bloxburg cul-de-sacs turn a stylish slide into a free swap. Leave the room first, juke second.

When to take high ground (and when not to)

High ground is a tool, not a personality.

Take it when you need information or a fall-swing. Rocket Arena pads, Glass Houses roofs, Crossroads castle, SFOTH islands, Craigville tagpads — these let you see the tagger’s approach and convert a drop into speed. In Crown, a short roof hold is legal if you already planned the exit. In Infected, height buys time while the horde climbs one ladder.

Leave it when the tagger can share the pad. If they are on the same rocket, you are in a 1v1 with nowhere to roll. If two infected are climbing both stairs of Blackrock Castle, the roof is a trap. If Freeze has a freezer waiting at the zipline exit, the outpost is a freezer. Camper crowns lose. Peasants love a king who stopped moving.

A simple test: can you name two exits from this ledge? If you only have one, you are not on high ground — you are in a cul-de-sac that happens to be tall.

No Tag Back and the swap

After a tag, NTB shields both bodies for a mode-dependent beat (often around three seconds; Freeze uses it on freeze and thaw). The 30 August 2026 patch put a timer on the icon. If you just got swapped into tagger, do not immediately chase the person you swapped with. That swing is wasted and it looks like panic. Turn 90 degrees, cut someone else, and let the shield drop.

If you are still a runner and you just got missed, that is your roll window. The tagger is in recovery. Leave the lane; do not emote.

Mode-specific runner notes

Classic — split. Two runners in the same quadrant are a buffet. Change Crossroads quadrants when a tagger appears, even if your current line is pretty.

Infected — never clump in the park. Patient zero wants a pile. Hold a lane with one teammate who can actually thaw… wait, Infected does not thaw. Hold a lane with space. If the horde takes the castle, you take the den, not the same stairs.

Freeze — you have a second job: tag frozen friends. A stylish juke that ignores a decaying teammate loses the round. Thaw, then leave together. Frozen players also knock you; do not stand on them unless you want a launch.

Bomb — if you receive the bomb, you are no longer a pure runner. Pass it on the next legal body. Holding it to “outplay” a 1v1 is how you explode. See special roles.

Team Swap / TDM — you may still wear a runner-like body on a color. Play the count. A juke that loses two converts is a bad juke.

Map habits worth drilling

On S-tier maps (Crossroads, Glass Houses, Rocket Arena) pick one exit per fight. On A-tier maps, pre-learn the dead ends (Bloxburg alleys, Craigville pads you have not used yet). On B-tier interiors, assume every doorway is a freezer.

Private-server intermission is for reps: slide boost on a pad, roll a drop, vault a lip ten times. Public Classic is for putting those reps in front of a tagger who wants your role.

When you start winning runner rounds, switch to the tagger page. The best survivors are people who know how a cut is planned. Redeem codes after the session, not during the juke.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

Should runners always hold the highest roof?

No. Take height for a fall swing or a look, then leave. A roof with one exit is a trap. Details in the high-ground section above and on maps.

What is the single most important runner input?

Roll timing. C before you land. It is S-tier on the tier list hub for a reason. Drill it in the movement guide.

How do I play runner in Freeze versus Classic?

Classic is selfish survival. Freeze adds thaw duty: tag frozen teammates before they decay into chillers. Ignore that and the round is gone.

Can I tag as a runner?

Only when the mode says so (thaw a frozen, steal a crown as peasant, pass a bomb). A Classic runner who swings at a tagger just announces their position.

What should I do after I get swapped?

Respect No Tag Back. Do not chase the same body. You are a tagger now — cut someone else.

Which map should I practise first?

Crossroads. Learn all four quadrants, then Glass Houses roofs. See the map tier list and getting started.
